Founded in 1963, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) is a forward looking comprehensive research university with a global vision and a mission to combine tradition with modernity, and to bring together China and the West. CUHK teachers and students hail from all corners of the world. In 2006, CUHK had more than 5,200 staff members, approximately 10,000 undergraduate and 2,000 research postgraduate students. Of these students, some 2,500 are from 45 countries and regions outside Hong Kong. CUHK offers over 330 undergraduate and postgraduate programs. The fees are in Hong Kong Dollars

Application fee = HK$400

Tuition Fee = HK$80,000

Caution Money = HK$450

Hostel Fee = Around HK$7,500, depending on the type of hostel.

Miscellaneous Fees = The above fees plus food, books, transportation, and pocket money should come to a total of between HK$85,000 and HK$120,000 per student per year.

General Application Procedure


Applicants shall be eligible to apply if they:

  • possess a qualification obtained outside Hong Kong which qualifies them for university admission in the country/region where such qualification is obtained* (e.g. SAT in USA, UEC / STPM in Malaysia, HSC / TER in Australia, OSSD in Canada, etc.); OR
  • have acquired an International Baccalaureate Diploma; OR
  • have obtained in one sitting of the GCE Advanced Level Examination pass grades in no less than three Advanced Level subjects (Applicants with pass grades in 2 Advanced Level and 2 Advanced Supplementary Level subjects may also apply); OR
  • have successfully completed:
    • at least one year of full-time undergraduate study at a recognized university; OR
    • a course of study leading to the qualification of an associate degree / higher diploma; OR
    • have other exceptional achievements which merit admission.

In addition, applicants should have attained an acceptable level of proficiency in English.

Applicants are:

  • expected to possess keen interests, suitable talents or academic background to make a unique contribution to the cultural diversity on campus;
  • recommended to take TOEFL, IELTS or other acceptable language test, if English is not their native language;
  • advised to make timely applications for student visa in order to register on the date specified;

You will need to pay a Non-refundable application fee of HK$400 (approx. to US$52)

Before submitting your application, please make sure that you have fully completed and signed your application and attach the following supporting documents:

  • a photocopy of your passport / identity certificate
  • certified true copies of credentials of your:
  • high school reports / transcripts and graduation certificate
  • diploma, degree transcripts and graduation certificate
  • result slip(s) of public examination(s) (IB / SAT / AP / GCE A-Level / others)
  • proficiency in English language (TOEFL / IELTS / others)
  • professional / academic achievements
  • Remarks: Please do not send your original documents by post. The University will not be responsible for any documents lost in the post. Transcripts and diplomas, which are not in English, must be accompanied by a certified translation in English.
  • admission offer letter from another recognized university
  • recommendation of an academic referee
  • payment of application fee

All students should fulfill the English Language Proficiency Requirement prescribed below before they are admitted:

  • possess a pass grade in English in one of the following examinations:
    • Hong Kong Advanced Level Exam (AS Level)
    • Hong Kong Higher Level Exam
    • CUHK Matriculation Exam or
    • have a degree from a university in Hong Kong or an English speaking country, or
    • submit one of the following scores for assessment by the programs concerned:
      • TOEFL
      • GMAT (Verbal)
      • College English Test (CET) of PRC
      • IELTS
    • have obtained a recognized professional qualification awarded in Hong Kong or an English speaking country

Each Graduate Division may set further requirements, including a subject test or language test, and may also waive such additional requirements in particular cases. Those who expect to obtain a Bachelor’s degree in the current academic year may also apply for admission. Some programs may require applicants to have full-time working experience. Please refer to the program leaflets for details.

Applicants with degrees awarded by overseas universities by distance learning or by completing a curriculum of short duration may be required to provide assessment report from the Hong Kong Council of Academic Accreditation (HKCAA) on the level of qualification obtained. Completed application forms and required supporting documents should be returned to the relevant Divisions, as specified in the “Notes for Applicants” of the application form. All supporting documents, including transcripts from the universities attended by the applicants and confidential recommendations from two referees, must reach the relevant Divisions before the application deadline.
