Bachelor Degrees

Duration:

Bachelor degrees take three to five years (usually four years) to complete or even less if you have already completed an associate degree in the same subject. The time is the same for both BA and BS degrees. In some cases, you can study part time but then the degree takes twice as long to complete. Note: scholarships do not usually cover part time study.

Eligibility:

Eligibility for bachelor degrees varies from country to country and may be slightly different for each university. Generally, you will need to have completed a high school level of 12 years also to study in most countries, need to prove you can speak the language of instruction (usually English language for international programs), and be able to get funding/scholarships to pay for your studies, accommodation, food and other costs. You must be able to get a passport and visa if the study is in another country. To get the visa you will need to prove you have adequate funding for university and living fees.

Because Myanmar high school education, or Tenth Standard is only 10 years long, many universities will not accept you without an additional two years of university, making a total of 12 years of education. If you do not meet the 12 years requirement, then you should consider taking an equivalence exam such as the GED or IGCSE or the SAT which may be accepted in place of 12 years of education. Most universities will not consider or accept students with Myanmar Tenth Standard education only.

You may need to take an English language exam such as TOEFL or IELTS. You should read through the qualifying exams section to find specific information about available exams and how to study for them.

Another way to make your application more attractive to universities and for scholarships is to have a work history related to your subject of study. For example, if you want to study education, you could increase your chances of acceptance to university and getting a scholarship by working as a teacher. This would make you more experienced and knowledgeable and seem more certain that this is the subject that you are really interested to study.

Costs:

In general, bachelor degrees are less expensive than master or PhD degrees. Unless you have enough money already for university, you will need to apply for and be granted a scholarship—they are not automatically given and are very competitive. University in the West is much more expensive. Additionally, visas are easier to obtain for Asian countries than in the West.

After Completion:

After the completion of a bachelor degree students may decide to begin working or to continue on to a master degree. Many students decide to get work experience after finishing the bachelor degree then later join a master degree program.
