Description:

  • The ASEAN Foundation (AF) is pleased to grant 2 full scholarships for those interested in studying at the Master of Arts program in International Development Studies (MAIDS) at Chulalongkorn University for the 2009-2010 academic year.
  • This year, one scholarship has been reserved for a Thai national while the second will be granted to a bonafide national from one of the following CLMV countries: Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam and Myanmar.
  • Scholarship applicants are also expected to have two years of professional experience in a development-related field at the time of application.
  • Scholarships cover the following: Roundtrip airfare (if applicable) – Modest living allowance – Monthly Living Stipend – Health Insurance – Tuition and registration fees – Pre-session workshops and/or Fieldtrips
  • Total Scholarship Value – Thai Scholarship: 14,369 USD/scholarship – International Scholarship: 17,828 USD/scholarship

Eligibility and Restrictions:

  • Scholarship applicants must be bonafide ASEAN nationals from Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam and Myanmar;
  • Candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree in the social sciences with a good overall academic standing;
  • Candidates must have at least 2 years work/volunteer experience in a related field;
  • Candidates must have demonstrated English proficiency on one of three recognized tests of language proficiency (TOEFL, IELTS or the CU-TEP — minimum TOEFL 550, IELTS 6.0 or CU-TEP 550)
  • Candidates must provide a statement of purpose explaining why they are interested in studying International Development Studies at Chulalongkorn University . They must also outline their research interests in addition to their personal and professional objectives. In turn, candidates must also have research interests in line with the mandates of the ASEAN Foundation.
  • Scholarship requirements:Applicants must both meet the minimum qualifications for MAIDS admission AND be admitted to the MAIDS program. scholars are expected to graduate within the prescribed period. Students who are required to enroll for additional trimester(s) will have to bear the additional cost of living and tuition fees.
  • MAIDS Program Admission Requirements: I) Entry Requirements – Applicants should possess a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in the social sciences with a good overall academic standing. – Applicants should also have 2 years work experience in a related field. Mature students and junior to mid-level professionals with experience in development are encouraged to apply. II) English Language Requirements Candidates will be required to demonstrate an acceptable level of language proficiency. Applicants must submit one of three English tests of language proficiency: TOEFL, IELTS or CU-TEP.

  • Scholarship applications are due March 31st, 2009. They should be sent directly to the MAIDS program.

  • Successful scholars will be notified whether or not they must attend the pre-session at the same time they are notified of their scholarship status (see above timeline). If the pre-session is not required, scholars may come to Thailand in early September 2009 to settle in Bangkok. The MAIDS program will begin the first week of October 2009.
  • Student Interviews:Short-listed candidates will be required to attend an interview either in person or by phone. The purpose of the interview is to ensure that students have an adequate understanding of development issues combined with an appropriate level of English language proficiency to complete their M.A. degree within the prescribed 12-month period.
  • Introductory Pre-session: AF-MAIDS Scholarship Program Awardees who are accepted to the MAIDS program may also be required to participate in a four-week intensive introductory session in Bangkok prior to the beginning of classes in October 2009. The dates for this introductory session have not yet been confirmed but will begin in late August or early September 2009. It will include classes in three core areas: 1. Academic English 2. Research Methods 3. Development Theory
