The University of the Philippines is a system composed of seven universities located throughout the Philippines.

Introduction

As the only national university in the country, the University of the Philippines (UP) System started as a small Manila campus with only a few colleges. Over the years, UP has made a reputation for itself as a research and graduate university that produces scientific and creative outputs of the highest quality which receive both national and in international recognition. Today, the University is comprised of seven constituent universities located in 12 campuses throughout the Philippine archipelago. UP’s constituent universities offer 246 undergraduate and 362 graduate programs, including almost all disciplines and embracing all interests and inclinations. UP’s student population of over 50,000 thrives in the liberal atmosphere that is part of the tradition of a UP education. And UP graduates have become the country’s leaders in politics and governance, law, the sciences, and the arts. Each one of the seven universities is more or less focused on certain disciplines. Here is the list of the seven universities composing the UP system and a brief description for each of them:

UP Diliman is not only the home of diverse colleges, offering 296 graduate and undergraduate courses, it also runs several centers of research, many of which have been declared by the Commission on Higher Education as National Centers of Excellence, among them the Marine Science Institute, National Institute of Geological Sciences, National Institute of Physics, National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, and the National Institute for Science and Mathematics Education Development. UP Diliman also has a strong commitment to the arts. Through such units as the Vargas Museum, the UP Film Institute, and the Likhaan: UP Institute of Creative Writing, the arts have been provided the space and encouragement they have needed to flourish.

With its research arm, the Cordillera Studies Center (CSC), UPB aims to contribute to higher education in Northern Luzon by collaborating with other institutions and expanding its research to preserve the cultural traditions of the Cordilleras, Northern Luzon, and Cagayan Valley.
