Overview:

A career in business is more varied than most people think. It can involve the obvious functions such as management and marketing, but more and more the need for business major specialists to apply their skills in government, international commerce, health care, arts, and non-profit organizations is being recognized. A business education is the backbone for economic, political and social systems at all levels. Your business degree can be applied to any industry and can also be used to help you start your own business. A college degree in business is said to be the most practical area of study since the curriculum provides students with so many real world applications and thus a smooth transition from school to career. Even so, students are advised to be prepared for the constant changes in the job market. Rather than choosing to focus your studies in an area that has a high demand for graduates as you start your program, pursue a path that is more in line with your own interests and talents. As Business is a wide major you could decide to specialize in one field of business study, such as: administration and management, international business, business communication, marketing or finance. Nevertheless you should like studying mathematics, computer and English if you choose a business major.

You can define management as the process of getting work done through people. It is management’s responsibility to achieve and maintain a business organization’s effectiveness. Management majors are prepared for careers in either general management (or in the specialization of human resource management) or entrepreneurship Traditionally, management includes activities such as planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. Management is responsible for the primary activities of the firm; those being inbound logistics, operations, outbound logistics, marketing and sales, and service. Management is also responsible for the support activities of infrastructure (accounting, finance, strategic planning), human resource management (recruiting, training and development, compensation management), technology development (product and process improvement), and procurement (material acquisition). Management crosses cultural boundaries as most organizations of significant size operate internationally.

Relevance to Myanmar:

Myanmar has a thriving market scene so business and management skills are in demand. As Myanmar modernizes, businesses and organizations need to be competitive in order to survive. Currently Myanmar businesses need to be competitive as there are new investments in the country, notably coming from China and Thailand which are increasing pressure to reform. Many outdated business practices are commonplace in Myanmar which lead to inefficiency. There is a need for students to study business and management because without it, Myanmar businesses may be put out of business by investments and companies coming from abroad. The best way for Myanmar to survive in a global world is to be aware of common issues including: contractual obligations, quality vs. quantity, generation of repeat business, customer service, and retention of employees. Teachers to a classroom are the same as managers to business. Having better educated business workers and managers means more overall success for the business. As Myanmar gradually reforms, it will open its doors for trade, technology, and capital flows. There will be a demand for skilled workers who know about financial matters, investments, and production.

Business workers and managers do not only need to be concerned with business in the sense of companies and profits. Many of the skills and practices these students will learn about will be equally applicable to non-profit and community-based organizations as well.
