Overview:

If you major in Computer and Information Sciences you’ll be learning about computers and computer technology, with an emphasis on the applications of such knowledge. This means you’ll focus on how computer technology can be applied to different fields. You’ll learn how to develop software applications and perform system analysis; you’ll study the process of developing software, from designing to programming to testing. You’ll be exposed to areas such as robotics, natural language recognition programs, artificial intelligence, programming languages, and numerical analysis.
Problem solving is a major part of Computer and Information Sciences, and graduates pursue careers in fields including business, management, and computer support.

Those who work in information technology provide a crucial link between technology and those who use and depend on it, but have little more than a superficial understanding of computers. In this major, you’ll learn how to design computing systems based on a business’ research, data, and communication needs.

In an information technology program, you’ll learn all the basics of computer science, including hardware and software components, programming, algorithms, databases, operating systems, and network administration. Relevance to Myanmar:

As computer usage in Myanmar increases, businesses and organizations will steadily adopt technology in their business practices. This means that there will be a growing demand for staff needed to start and maintain electronic information and networks. Modern offices use computers, computer networks and the Internet to create, store and communicate information to one another.

For organizations such as schools, computer technology will be especially important as schools try to fill the demand for students who are knowledgeable and capable to work in offices using computer technology.

People who graduate with these degrees will be able to either do computer or IT work as their degree has taught them, or they will be equally valuable as teachers in private and public schools, institutes and universities; some will go on to create businesses which serve the computer and IT needs of businesses and organizations.

Why is the subject you studied (or are studying now) important for Myanmar?

Today is Information Technology age. I believe that the IT is really important for the development of our country. In this age, if you don’t have any knowledge of basic computer principals, it’s difficult to learn the other developing technical surroundings, the data information for any specific sections, and subjects of what you really interested. If someone knows very well how to use computer systems, they can learn very easily using internet. You can find anything online that you are interested in and what you want to learn. That is why I choose to study this Computer Information System. When I have completed learning in this field, I can share my technical knowledge other people. This is the way to promote IT field for our country.

How have you been able to use your education after you graduated (or how will you in the future)?

To be honest, I have one imagine when I finished studying in MS CIS, I’d like to teach to every Burmese people who don’t know very well the IT field so they can use computers to find something that they want on the Internet, so they can use free email and so that they can create their own website. Now, I am teaching many migrant workers in Thailand. They learn basic computer knowledge. According to our country’s current situation, many people came to our neighbor countries to work. In these instances, most of them know nothing about how to use a computer. So I decided to teach those people so they can use a computer easily. Later, I can share my knowledge if someone would like to use a computer as an expert as well as how they can survive as a professional computer technician.

What are the real job opportunities to work for Myanmar with your degree?

When someone studies this subject, they can stand as a computer technician in our country. As much as they understand, they can do senior programming, be a webmaster, web developer, software architect, system analyst or work in other computer related fields.

The convergence of computers and information and communication system has led to new paradigms of doing business, learning, social interactions, governance and delivery of products & services. This program focuses on the effective design, development and implementation of information and communications technology resources to ensure information systems, applications and resource viability in various industry sectors (business, education, media and entertainment, healthcare, government, and service). The program is intended to train future professionals in the science of conceptualizing, designing, implementing, maintaining and managing information and communications technology resources in specific and applied environments. This new breed of professionals will support the corporate, end-user and ubiquitous computing services applied in various areas such as business, education, media and entertainment, and other industry areas.

Information management is the handling of information acquired by one or many disparate sources in a way that optimizes access by all who have a share in that information or a right to that information. Information is an essential resource for academic excellence, competitiveness in business and industry, scientific progress, and national development. Like any other resource, information must be managed. High-quality sources must be located, and arrangements must be made for access to timely, accurate, appropriate, and cost-effective information. Technological advances in telecommunications and the hardware and software of computing can be utilized to provide the optimum access to information. The need for information management skills in government and private organizations is increasingly recognized. People knowledgeable in methods of facilitating information collection, dissemination, and use are in demand. Such persons should also be skilled in identifying information needs and in accessing, repackaging, and presenting information in such a way that it can be utilized in support of the objectives of the users. The Information Management curriculum is designed to prepare students to respond to four basic challenges confronting organizations today: planning the effective use of information and utilization of communication technologies within organizations; developing corporate and government policies to maximize the benefits resulting from the wide-spread use of these technologies; improving the strategic management of information resources in business, government, and non-profit organizations; increasing the productivity and creativity of managers and executives who work with information resources.

Information Systems

A program in Information Systems program is designed to provide students with knowledge in information systems concepts such as internetworking, strategic information systems planning, and information systems development. Graduates of the program are expected to be able to: demonstrate in-depth understanding of technical concepts and ethical issues pertaining to information systems and undertake the proper design and implementation of a production-grade information.

Instructional Systems Technology

This is a program about the advanced usage of computers and information technology in learning at home, in school, and in the office. It equips students with the necessary skills, perspectives, and tools to develop, design, and implement innovative instructional systems. The curriculum design covers the four major components of instructional systems, namely technology, methodology, presentation, and content to have a good balance of courses in computer science, physics and mathematical sciences, liberal arts, education, and major courses in innovative instructional systems and technologies. The program utilizes multimedia technologies in the design and development of instructional systems for corporations and academe; it has specialized courses on web design, content management and online learning.

Internet and Multimedia Technology

In the past few years there has been an explosion in the number of people using the Internet. These users expect high quality material to be delivered over the web, including graphics, animation, sound and movie clips. This program will teach you the skills you need to design, produce and deliver websites. You will cover three main areas: design, implementation and delivery. The design strand concentrates on good design practice, including aesthetics, humancomputer interfaces, system analysis and design methodologies. In the implementation section you will learn multimedia programming, web programming, including data-driven websites, and how to produce and manipulate audio and video clips. In the delivery section you will learn how web-based information can be delivered to a user. This covers wireless and wire-based communication systems and security issues. When you graduate you will have all these skills and can expect to work as a web designer or developer in companies, consultancies and the public sector.

Management Information Systems

In this major, you’ll learn how to design computer systems to help people and organizations function more effectively. As you might expect, management information systems entails a whole slew of computer courses, including languages and programming, information technology and security, and systems planning and integration. A major in management information systems will also provide a solid grounding in all aspects of business management, including human resources, business law, and contracting. You’ll learn how to analyze individual needs, as well as the larger economic and social priorities of a company, so you can most effectively structure and organize its data. Students in the Software Technology specialization are given a variety of advanced computer science courses to provide them an in-depth knowledge in these areas. Among those are Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Distributed Databases, Operating Systems, and Web Development. Software Engineering is a field of Computer Science that deals with the development process of a software product. It starts from the inception, to the design, the implementation, down to the delivery and maintenance of the software product. Artificial Intelligence deals with designing computer systems to behave intelligently. These programs are constructed to perform similarly as a human, whose behavior is considered as intelligent. Distributed Databases focuses on how data are stored, managed, and accessed over a network of computers. Operating Systems are important because it is the middleware between the computer hardware and the computer software.
