Founded in Shanghai in October 1951, East China Normal University (ECNU) is one of the most prestigious universities in China sponsored by the national top university construction programs “Project 211” and “Project 985”. In 2017, ECNU was chosen as one of the 36 Class A universities on the list of Double First Class University Plan released by the central government of China.
With two beautiful campuses located in Minhang and Putuo districts of Shanghai, and covering a total area of more than 207 hectares, ECNU has long been known as a Garden University.
Since China opened up to the outside world in 1978, ECNU has developed rapidly into a comprehensive research university. At present, the University has 4 faculties, 30 full-time schools, 4 colleges, 8 advanced research institutes, one college of further education, and one national training center for secondary principals. Its 58 departments offer a total of 84 undergraduate programs in humanities, education, science, engineering, economics, management, philosophy, psychology, law, history and art. In addition, the University also offers 30 doctoral programs, 36 master’s programs, one professional doctoral program, 21 professional master’s programs, and 26 post-doctoral mobile research stations.
Eligibility
- Non-Chinese citizen with a valid foreign passport.
- Bachelor or higher education degree.
- For Chinese-taught programs, new HSK-5 with a passing score of 210 or new HSK-6 with a passing score of 180. For English-taught programs, effective English Language Test Certificate or official proof of taking English-taught programs (details refer to the Language Proficiency Certificate) is required. Native English speakers do not need to submit the English Proficiency Certificate.
Application Documents

- Please log into the online application system at lxsapply.ecnu.edu.cn to fill in and print out the application form.
- Certificate of Bachelor or Higher Education Degree
- Scan copy of original documents. If documents are not in Chinese or English, a notarized and translated version in Chinese or in English is required.
- Graduating students should provide a certificate of impending graduation, and the expected time to obtain the degree certificate should be earlier than August 31, 2021. Graduation certificate and diploma should be submitted for the registration.
- Official Academic Transcript of Bachelor or Higher Education Degree
- Original or notarized copy documents. If documents are not in Chinese or English, a notarized and translated version in Chinese or in English is required.
- A Study or Research Plan
- Words: no less than 800 words
- Language: Written in Chinese for Chinese-taught programs or English for English-taught programs.
- Content: Include but not limited to personal study or work experience, academic research outcome, research plan of master program, personal goal after graduation.
- Two Recommendation Letters from two professors or associate professors.
- Photocopy of Passport (Include personal information page and Chinese visa pages if you have been in China)
- Effective (within 6 months) Health Certificate
- Non-criminal Certificate(notarized photocopy in English or Chinese).
- Award Certificates.
Major Supplemental Documents:
- Applicants for art related majors should submit your portfolio.
- Applicants for Master major of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages should ADD:
- HSKK Intermediate ≥60;
- An essay related to the major (around 1000 words).
Language Requirements

- For Chinese-taught programs: effective (within 2 yrs) HSK certificate (HSK Level 5 over 210 or HSK Level 6 over 180).
- For English taught program: English Language Test Certificate or official proof of taking English-taught programs.

b) Proof of Taking English-taught Program
- Bachelor or Higher Degree is taught in English and test language is English as well.
- Official proof with official institution letterhead should be issued by the university, such as registration office or graduate school, instead of department of the university or supervisors.
* Applicants without any related English Proficiency Certificate should take the English Language Test as soon as possible.
Application Procedures
- Apply online: Log into ECNU International Students online application website: http://lxsapply.ecnu.edu.cn/. Please register and submit the online application. Upload your application documents and pay the 800 RMB application fee online, which won’t be refunded.
- Scholarship applicants should also register and submit the application form on scholarship website.
- Submit your application materials: Submit all the original copies of your application documents in full set to the following address before the DEADLINE of the program or scholarship you apply for – Add: Global Education Center of ECNU, Room 253, Physics building, 3663 North Zhongshan Rd., Zip code: 200062, Tel: +86-21-62232013 / 62238353
- The application documents and application fee will not be returned no matter you are accepted or not.
- Track your application status online (Pay attention to your email box or log into your ECNU online application account to check your application status.)
- Admission and University Enrollment: The result of your application will be announced through your application account. Admitted students must register on the mentioned date on admission letter and bring the original graduation certificate and degree certificate for check. Your enrollment will be canceled without providing the relevant certificates.
