CUHK undertakes a wide range of research programmes in many subject areas, and strives to provide scope for all academic staff to undertake consultancy and collaborative projects with industry. The University’s insistence on the highest standards of research has won it an enviable research reputation. Hong Kong’s University Grants Committee (UGC) provides preferential grant funding to the local tertiary institutions to conduct research into 24 selected Areas of Excellence (AoEs). Nine of these AoEs are being led by researchers from CUHK. The University houses five state key laboratories which are entrusted by the Ministry of Science and Technology of China to produce research of international quality and carry out important national research tasks. The University also has an excellent record of published research, both in discipline-specific journals and in more high-profile publications such as Science, Nature, and The Lancet.
Scholarship Programs
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) offers admission scholarships to both local and non-local new undergraduate students on the basis of their excellent academic or non-academic performance. There is no need for the students to apply for these scholarships. The University will identify qualified new students and inform the selected students of the scholarship offers.
- HKSAR Government Scholarship
- Belt and Road Scholarship
- The scholarship is open to students from four designated countries, namely Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar and Thailand.
CUHK will nominate first year undergraduate students to the Education Bureau for HKSAR Government Scholarship and Belt and Road Scholarship. Separate applications for these scholarships are not required.
- The “International Students Admissions Scheme” is for non-localThis file may not be fully web accessible applicants who:
- require a student visa / entry permit to study in Hong Kong; or
- are holders of a visa / entry permit under the Immigration Arrangements for Non-local Graduates (IANG); or
- are holders of a dependant visa / entry permit who were 18 years old or above when they were issued with such visa / entry permit by the Director of Immigration.
- Mainland China students, who are current Gaokao candidates (应届高考生), are not eligible to apply through this Scheme and their applications will not be accepted. General Requirements
You are eligible to apply for admission if, by 1 September of the year in which admission is sought, you possess any of the following qualifications:
1. GCE-AL / International-AL / IB / Other high school qualifications
- GCE-AL / International-AL: 3AL / 2AL+2AS in one sitting (All grades must be obtained from examinations taken within a twelve-month period.)

2. Post-secondary qualifications
- Completed at least one year of undergraduate study at a recognised university
- Completed at least one year of study leading to the qualification of associate degree / higher diploma or its equivalent
3. Mature Applicants
- Mature persons aged 23 or above on 1 September in the year in which admission is sought, provided they are able to show either by publication or by other acceptable evidence that they have achieved sufficient competence in their chosen field of study to justify admission; or have shown exceptional ability in appropriate academic or professional fields.
4. Exceptional Achievements
- Have other exceptional achievements which merit admission.
Language Requirements
Applicants should have attained an acceptable level of proficiency in the English language. Below are the minimum required scores or grades for some of the more common acceptable examinations. Applicants should have attained one of the following qualifications and the corresponding minimum attainments to be considered for admission to the University.

Requirement for Myanmar Students
- Basic Education High School Examination / Matriculation Examination with an overall average of 75% or
